Overfishing, global warming, other human effects: Who could have ever imagined that vast, powerful oceans could be harmed by humans? Yet, evidence is mounting that human activities are altering the oceans. Fish like cod which once roamed the oceans in massive numbers are now so reduced that their fisheries are virtually shut down. Sharks are in so much trouble due to overfishing and by-catch that the author of Jaws, Peter Benchley, now speaks on their behalf. Coastlines everywhere are degraded and overdeveloped. Salt marshes, the nurseries of the sea, have been drained and turned into shopping malls. Coral reefs are dying, perhaps due to the rise in ocean temperatures caused by global warming.
